Conclusion

Conclusion

MCU (Microcontroller Unit) and MPU (Microprocessor Unit) are two fundamental processor architectures used in electronic and embedded systems. Both handle data processing tasks, but their intended uses, structures, and operating principles are quite different. In particular, the difference between a microcontroller (What is an MCU?) and a microprocessor (What is an MPU?) is critical for selecting the right hardware during electronic product development processes.

What Is an MCU? (Microcontroller)

An MCU, or microcontroller, is a compact electronic control unit that integrates a processor (CPU), memory (RAM, ROM/Flash), and input/output units onto a single chip. Microcontrollers are typically designed to perform a specific task and are widely used in embedded systems.

Thanks to their low power consumption, low cost, and real-time capabilities, MCUs are particularly preferred in applications such as home appliances, automotive systems, IoT devices, and industrial control systems. For example, the program control of a washing machine or the data reading of a sensor system is managed directly by an MCU.

What Is an MPU? (Microprocessor)

An MPU, or microprocessor, is a more powerful processing unit consisting solely of a processor core and requiring external memory and peripheral devices to function. Microprocessors are typically used in applications that require higher processing power.

MPUs are preferred in computers, smartphones, tablets, and high-performance industrial systems due to their ability to run operating systems. Operating systems such as Linux or Android typically run on MPU-based systems.

Key Differences Between MCUs and MPUs

The most fundamental difference between an MCU and an MPU is their level of integration and intended use. An MCU integrates all essential components onto a single chip, making it an ideal solution for simpler, low-power systems. An MPU, on the other hand, provides higher performance but requires external components and is used in more complex systems.

Another important difference is their operating principle. While MCUs are generally designed for a single task or limited operations, MPUs are suitable for multitasking and complex software systems. For this reason, MCUs excel in real-time control applications, while MPUs are better suited for applications requiring high processing power.

When Should an MCU Be Used, and When Should an MPU Be Used?

If a project requires low power consumption, low cost, and fast response times, an MCU is the preferred choice. Microcontrollers are the best choice, particularly for sensor-based systems, automation solutions, and embedded devices.

In contrast, MPUs are used in projects that feature a graphical user interface, run an operating system, or require high data processing capacity. Smartphones, tablets, and advanced industrial computers fall into this category.

Conclusion

MCUs (microcontrollers) and MPUs (microprocessors) are the building blocks of modern electronic systems, but their intended uses are completely different.

Embedded software refers to specialized software systems that run inside electronic devices and control the hardware. It is one of the fundamental building blocks that enables many of the electronic products we use today to become “smart.” From smartphones to home appliances, and from automotive systems to industrial devices, many technologies operate thanks to embedded software. For this reason, embedded software is considered one of the most critical components of the modern electronic world.

What Is Embedded Software?

Embedded software is a type of software developed specifically for a particular electronic device and designed solely to enable that device to perform its functions. Unlike general-purpose software, it is designed for a single function or system and runs directly on the hardware. It operates in microcontroller- or microprocessor-based systems and manages the device’s entire control mechanism.

Thanks to embedded software, a device detects commands from the user, collects data from sensors, and processes this data to produce the correct output. This structure is particularly important in real-time systems.

Its Relationship with Embedded Systems

Embedded systems are integrated structures in which hardware and embedded software work together. These systems combine sensors, processors, and electronic components, and the layer that manages the entire process is the embedded software. While hardware alone does not perform any function, embedded software makes it operational and intelligent.

For example, in a washing machine, adjusting the water level, controlling the motor speed, and selecting a program are all managed entirely by embedded software. Similarly, in a car, the braking system, the engine control unit, and the safety systems also operate using embedded software.

Where Is Embedded Software Used?

Embedded software has a very wide range of applications today. In the automotive industry, it is used in vehicle control systems, engine management, and safety technologies. In home appliances, it provides energy management and program control. In industrial automation systems, it controls production lines.

It also manages data collection, wireless communication, and remote control processes in IoT (Internet of Things) devices. Medical devices, defense industry systems, and smart devices are other key areas where embedded software is actively used.

The Importance of Embedded Software in Electronic Products

The key element that enables electronic products to become “smart devices” is embedded software. The same hardware can perform completely different functions depending on the software used. This demonstrates just how critical software is in product development processes.

Embedded software enables devices to operate faster, consume less energy, and be more reliable. It plays an indispensable role, particularly in Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT), and automation systems.

Conclusion

Embedded software is the core technology at the heart of modern electronic systems; it controls the hardware and enables devices to function. Today, many electronic products operate and become “smart” thanks to embedded systems.

Electronic components are the basic parts that make up electronic circuits and enable the control of electric current. All the electronic devices we use in our daily lives—from phones to computers, and from home appliances to industrial systems—function through the combination of these electronic components, each of which performs a different task. Electronic components ensure that circuits operate correctly and stably by performing functions such as routing, regulating, amplifying, or storing electrical signals.

What Is an Electronic Component?

Electronic components are passive or active circuit elements that perform a specific function within an electronic circuit. While these components do not perform a meaningful function on their own, they work together with other electronic elements within a circuit to form the entire system. Thanks to electronic components, electrical energy can be controlled, and desired operations can be carried out.

The Basic Principles of How Electronic Components Work

The operating principle of electronic components is based on the controlled direction of electric current. Each component within a circuit contributes to the proper functioning of the system by altering the amount, direction, or behavior of the current. For example, some components limit the current, while others store energy, and still others amplify signals or perform switching operations.

Types of Electronic Components

Electronic components are generally divided into two main groups: active and passive. This classification is based on whether the component contributes energy to the circuit.

Passive electronic components are elements that do not generate energy in a circuit but direct or store electric current. Resistors, capacitors, and inductors belong to this group. Resistors ensure the safe operation of a circuit by limiting current, while capacitors temporarily store electrical energy and are used in filtering applications. Inductors, on the other hand, create a magnetic field and serve the functions of energy storage and signal filtering.

Active electronic components, on the other hand, are components that can supply power to a circuit and control signals. Transistors, diodes, and integrated circuits fall into this category. While transistors are used for signal amplification and switching, diodes allow current to flow in only one direction. Integrated circuits, on the other hand, combine many electronic functions into a single structure, forming the foundation of modern electronic systems.

Functions of Electronic Components

The most basic function of electronic components is to control the flow of electric current, ensuring that the circuit operates as intended. This control ensures that energy is directed to the right places, the system is protected, and efficient operation is maintained. In addition, some electronic components also perform more advanced functions such as signal processing, data transmission, power management, and frequency control.

Applications of Electronic Components

Electronic components have a very wide range of applications today. They play a critical role in many fields, such as consumer electronics, the automotive sector, healthcare technologies, the defense industry, communication systems, and industrial automation. Smart devices, IoT systems, and modern manufacturing technologies all rely entirely on these components being properly integrated.

The Importance of Electronic Components

With advances in technology, electronic components have become smaller, more efficient, and more powerful. This progress has both improved device performance and reduced energy consumption. Today, electronic components are recognized not merely as circuit elements but as the fundamental building blocks of modern technology. Selecting the right components is one of the most important factors directly determining the success of an electronic system.

Conclusion

Electronic components are the critical building blocks that form the foundation of modern technology and enable the operation of nearly all electronic systems. From simple circuits to complex industrial systems, they perform various functions across all fields, making our lives easier. Choosing the right electronic components is of great importance in terms of both performance and reliability.

The success of an electronic product does not depend solely on the right choice of components or high-quality manufacturing. The PCB design, which forms the foundation of the product, is of critical importance in terms of performance, reliability, and manufacturability. Even a minor error made during the design phase can lead to increased production costs, extended delivery times, and unexpected problems with the product in the field.

During the electronic circuit board design process, engineers often focus on the circuit’s functionality and may overlook issues that could arise during the manufacturing phase. For this reason, the DFM (Design for Manufacturing) approach—which focuses on manufacturability—is of great importance in today’s PCB design processes.

So, what are the most common design errors in PCB manufacturing, and how can these errors be prevented?

1. Use of Insufficient Track Width

One of the most common mistakes made in PCB design is failing to design current-carrying traces with sufficient width. Narrow copper traces, especially those used in power circuits, can lead to overheating, voltage drops, and reliability issues over the long term.

During the design phase, the maximum current that will flow through the circuit should be taken into account, and appropriate trace widths should be determined. This will help improve both the board’s performance and its lifespan.

2. Failure to Properly Plan Component Layout

In electronic circuit board design, the placement of components is not merely an aesthetic consideration. Improper placement can affect signal integrity, cause electromagnetic interference, and complicate manufacturing processes.

Especially in high-frequency circuits, the spacing between critical components must be carefully planned. At the same time, the operating principles of automatic placement machines must also be taken into account.

3. Inadequate Use of a Ground Plane

The absence of a ground plane is one of the root causes of many PCB performance issues.

An inadequate grounding design can lead to increased electromagnetic noise, reduced signal quality, and operational instability. Establishing a robust grounding structure is of critical importance, particularly in designs that include high-speed data lines.

4. Failure to Follow DFM Rules

Just because a PCB design works doesn't mean it's manufacturable.

DFM guidelines ensure that the design is prepared for mass production. Failure to consider criteria such as minimum trace spacing, hole diameters, component spacing, and soldering requirements can increase production costs.

In professional PCB manufacturing processes, DFM review is considered one of the most important steps prior to production.

5. Common Mistakes When Using Via

Via, These are metal-plated through-holes that establish electrical connections between different layers on a PCB. In multilayer boards, they enable the transmission of signal, power, and ground lines between layers.

However, using too many vias or placing them incorrectly can negatively affect board performance. Since each via adds additional inductance and capacitance to the signal path, it can compromise signal integrity, particularly in high-speed digital circuits and RF applications.

In high-speed signals, the unnecessary use of vias can lead to impedance changes, signal reflections, delays, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues. Additionally, improperly placed vias can increase production costs while also negatively affecting the PCB’s mechanical strength.

For this reason, during PCB design, the number, location, and type of vias (through-hole, blind via, buried via) as well as layer transitions must be carefully planned; signal paths should be as short and optimized as possible. This approach both increases manufacturability and improves the board’s electrical performance.

6. Designing Power and Signal Lines Close to Each Other

One of the most common problems among PCB design errors is the incorrect placement of power and signal lines.

The proximity of high-current lines to sensitive signal paths can cause electromagnetic interference. As a result, measurement errors, communication problems, and system instabilities may occur.

For this reason, critical signal paths must be properly isolated from power circuits.

7. Failure to Add Test Points

Many designers assume that a circuit that works during the prototyping phase will also function without issues in mass production. However, the boards must be tested after production.

The lack of test points complicates debugging processes and increases service costs. The test access points that production and quality control teams will need must be planned during the design phase.

8. Incorrect Use of Footprint

A significant portion of PCB manufacturing defects are caused by component footprints.

Libraries used without reviewing the datasheet, incorrect pin configurations, or incorrect dimensions can lead to serious problems during production. It is crucial to verify all footprints before the design is finalized.

This check must be performed, especially for integrated circuits with a special package structure.

9. Failure to Communicate with the Manufacturer During the Design Process

One of the issues often overlooked when preparing a PCB design guide is feedback from manufacturers.

Failing to share the design with the manufacturer until the final stage may lead to unexpected revisions during production. However, PCB manufacturers and electronic assembly companies have significant experience in manufacturability.

Technical feedback received during the design phase both reduces costs and enables the product to move into production more quickly.

How to Prevent PCB Design Errors?

A successful PCB design is not limited to simply meeting electrical requirements. The design must be manufacturable, testable, and capable of operating reliably over the long term.

For this reason, it is of great importance to apply DFM guidelines during the design process, establish communication with manufacturing partners at an early stage, and conduct detailed design verification processes.

In addition, incorporating feedback received during the prototype production phase into subsequent revisions enables the development of higher-quality and lower-cost products in the long term.

Conclusion

PCB design errors can lead to time losses, additional costs, and quality issues in electronic product development processes. Many details—from trace width selection to thermal management, and from footprint verification to DFM rules—directly impact the product’s success.

Electronic product development processes are becoming more complex with each passing year. Designing a product, sourcing its components, PCB manufacturing, electronic board assembly, testing, and moving to mass production all require the collaboration of various areas of expertise. For this reason, many companies prefer to work with Electronic Manufacturing Service (EMS) providers rather than handling all production processes in-house.

EMS companies have become an integral part of the product development process, particularly for companies operating in the fields of IoT devices, industrial electronic systems, defense industry projects, medical devices, and consumer electronics.

So, what is EMS, what services do EMS companies offer, and what benefits do they provide to businesses?

What Is EMS?

EMS stands for “Electronic Manufacturing Services” in English and is referred to as “Elektronik Üretim Hizmeti” in Turkish.

Companies that offer EMS services are specialized organizations that manage and carry out the production processes of electronic products on behalf of their customers. This service is not limited to the production of electronic circuit boards. It can encompass a wide range of processes, from component procurement to PCB production, from electronic circuit board assembly to functional testing and product assembly.

Today, many technology companies focus on product design and sales while outsourcing their manufacturing operations to EMS companies. This allows them to benefit from a professional manufacturing infrastructure without incurring high investment costs.

What Do EMS Companies Do?

Although the services offered by an EMS company may vary depending on the scope of the project, the primary goal is to manage the journey of an electronic product from design through mass production.

The process typically begins with an evaluation of the customer’s electronic design files and manufacturing requirements. This is followed by BOM analyses, component sourcing planning, and manufacturing feasibility checks.

The next stage involves PCB manufacturing, electronic board assembly, and quality control processes. Depending on the product’s requirements, functional testing, programming, mechanical assembly, and final product integration may also be included in the scope of EMS services.

Thanks to this approach, customers can manage all their production processes from a single point of contact, rather than working with different suppliers separately.

What Is Turnkey PCB Assembly?

One of the most common terms in the EMS industry is "turnkey PCB assembly" service.

In a turnkey approach, the customer provides only the design data, and the rest of the manufacturing process is managed by the EMS company. Component procurement, logistics planning, PCB manufacturing, board assembly, quality control, and delivery are all provided as part of a single service package.

This model offers significant advantages, particularly for companies that do not wish to establish their own purchasing or production organization.

Thanks to the turnkey PCB assembly service, supply chain processes are accelerated while the operational burden is significantly reduced.

Why Choose EMS Services?

Electronic manufacturing processes require significant investment. SMT assembly lines, test equipment, quality control systems, and specialized personnel can incur substantial costs.

Working with EMS companies allows these costs to be shared. Instead of investing in production infrastructure, companies can focus on product development, marketing, and sales activities.

In addition, since EMS providers work with many different customers, they have significant experience in component procurement, production planning, and quality management.

This approach not only provides a cost advantage but also reduces the risks that may arise during production processes.

The Relationship Between Printed Circuit Board Assembly and EMS

Electronic circuit board assembly is one of the most important components of EMS services.

The process of placing electronic components onto a PCB using SMT and THT manufacturing technologies requires a professional manufacturing infrastructure. Assembly quality directly affects the product’s performance and reliability.

Thanks to their modern assembly lines, EMS companies can meet a wide range of needs, from prototype production to high-volume mass production.

For this reason, the electronic circuit board assembly service is considered one of the cornerstones of EMS solutions.

What Should You Consider When Choosing an EMS Company?

Choosing the right EMS partner can directly impact product success.

An EMS company’s production capacity, quality management system, testing infrastructure, and component supply network must be carefully evaluated. In addition, its ability to provide engineering support and analyze the design’s suitability for production offers significant advantages.

In particular, component availability, alternative parts management, and post-production technical support play a critical role in long-term partnerships.

In addition, ISO certifications, quality processes, and traceability systems are among the key indicators of professional EMS services.

In Which Industries Are EMS Services Used?

Electronic manufacturing services have a very wide range of applications today.

Industrial automation systems, IoT devices, energy management systems, telecommunications equipment, medical devices, defense industry applications, and consumer electronics products are among the main sectors that benefit from EMS services.

In virtually every product category that includes electronics, there may be a need for the manufacturing and supply support offered by EMS companies.

Conclusion

EMS, or Electronic Manufacturing Services, is a professional service model that provides comprehensive support to companies developing electronic products, from design through mass production. Critical stages such as component procurement, PCB manufacturing, electronic board assembly, testing processes, and product assembly can be managed by EMS companies.

Working with the right EMS partner can reduce costs, speed up production processes, and improve product quality. EMS services offer a significant competitive advantage, especially for companies aiming for scalable production.

One of the most common challenges in electronic product development and manufacturing processes is the procurement of electronic components. Due to global supply chain issues, semiconductor shortages, and manufacturer-related inventory problems—particularly in recent years—many companies are struggling to obtain the parts they need on time.

Once a circuit board design is complete, all components must be procured in full before moving on to the production phase. However, sometimes even the unavailability of a single integrated circuit, microcontroller, or passive component can bring the entire production process to a halt. In such cases, one of the most effective methods companies turn to is the use of equivalent electronic components.

So, what is an equivalent component, how do you find one, and what should you keep in mind when selecting one?

What Is an Equivalent Electronic Component?

Equivalent electronic components are alternative electronic components that can be used in place of the original part and have the same or similar technical specifications. These components may be manufactured by different manufacturers but are designed to fulfill the basic functions required by the system.

For example, if a voltage regulator used in production is out of stock, a product from another manufacturer with the same input and output values, similar current capacity, and compatible package design may be selected.

A properly selected equivalent component ensures that production can continue without affecting product performance. However, incorrect choices can lead to the need for board design revisions, performance losses, and even field failures.

Why Is There a Need for Replacement Parts?

In the electronics industry, component replacement isn’t just an issue when there’s a stock shortage. In some cases, manufacturers may discontinue certain product lines or transition to new-generation products. When this happens, the search for alternatives to components that have been in use for many years begins.

In addition, longer lead times are another significant factor. For some electronic components, lead times can stretch to weeks or even months. These waiting periods can result in significant costs, particularly for companies engaged in mass production.

Cost optimization is also one of the common reasons for using equivalent components. If there is a price advantage among different brands that offer similar performance, manufacturers may opt for alternative products.

What Should You Consider When Selecting Equivalent Components?

When selecting equivalent electronic components, it is not enough to look only at the part number. A detailed comparison of the technical specifications is required.

First, it is important to examine the electrical parameters. The operating voltage, current capacity, power consumption, frequency values, and tolerance ranges must be checked. Even minor variations in these values can affect system performance.

Package type and pin configuration are also critical considerations. In particular, when sourcing SMD components, it is common for products with the same function to be available in different packages. If an alternative product does not physically fit the existing PCB design, additional engineering work may be required.

Environmental working conditions must also be evaluated. In products used in industrial applications, heat resistance, moisture tolerance, and long-term reliability play a significant role.

Why Is a Datasheet Comparison Important?

Manufacturer datasheets are the most important resource when selecting equivalent components. Identifying alternatives based solely on a part’s product code can pose serious risks.

When reviewing a datasheet, you should compare the electrical characteristics, pin configuration, operating temperature, mechanical dimensions, and recommended application circuits.

Companies that offer professional component procurement services not only manage inventory but also provide engineering support to help identify suitable alternative products.

This process is of critical importance, especially in complex electronic circuit board projects.

The Importance of Alternative Components During a Chip Shortage

The global chip shortage that followed the pandemic led to major changes in the electronics industry. Many manufacturers were unable to source the microcontrollers, processors, and power management ICs they needed for months.

During this period, alternative parts management enabled many companies to continue production. Since similar risks persist today, many manufacturers are developing secondary sourcing strategies during the design phase.

When developing a product, identifying alternative sources in advance—rather than relying solely on components from a single manufacturer—significantly reduces supply risks.

Management of Equivalent Parts in Electronic Circuit Board Manufacturing

Component continuity is of great importance in electronic circuit board assembly and mass production processes. A PCB may contain hundreds or even thousands of different components. The absence of even a single one of these components can cause the entire production line to come to a halt.

For this reason, professional manufacturers create lists of alternative products for critical components as part of their BOM (Bill of Materials) management. This ensures that production processes are minimally disrupted in the event of any supply issues.

Especially in electronic circuit board assembly projects, collaboration between component suppliers and engineering teams provides significant benefits in terms of both cost savings and production continuity.

Why Is a Reliable Electronics Parts Supplier Important?

Selecting equivalent products is not merely a technical process. It also requires reliable supply chain management.

Thanks to authorized distributors and reliable electronic component suppliers, companies can protect themselves from the risks associated with counterfeit products. The use of counterfeit products—particularly in integrated circuits and semiconductors—can lead to serious quality issues.

For this reason, when sourcing components, it is important to consider not only price but also product traceability, manufacturer approval, and technical support options.

Conclusion

Delays in the supply of electronic components and inventory issues are among the most significant challenges facing today’s manufacturing processes. By selecting the right equivalent electronic components, production continuity can be maintained, costs can be optimized, and supply risks can be reduced.

However, it is important to remember that the equivalent selection process involves more than just matching product codes. Technical analysis, datasheet comparisons, and engineering evaluations are critical to achieving successful results.

When a PCB design is completed, the process is not over yet. In order for the design to be produced, the correct files must be sent to the manufacturer. At this point, one of the most frequently heard concepts in the electronic design world is the Gerber file.

PCB manufacturers do not directly use the design program's file to physically produce the board. Instead, they require standardized production files that define each layer of the board and its manufacturing details. Incorrect or incomplete production files can result in production delays, cost overruns and even completely faulty PCB production. In this article, we take a detailed look at what a Gerber file is, why it is critical in PCB manufacturing and which files should be prepared when sending to production.

What is the Gerber File?

The Gerber file is the standard production file format used in PCB manufacturing. It transfers copper paths, solder masks, text and other layer information on the board to the manufacturer. In short, the Gerber file is the PCB design translated into a language that the production machine can understand. PCB manufacturers determine how the board will be produced by looking at these files. The dimensions of the board, copper layers, solder mask openings and print layers are included in Gerber files. Today, the Gerber RS-274X format is used as the industry standard.

Is the Gerber File a Single File?

One of the most common mistakes beginners make is to think that Gerber is a single file. In fact, a PCB manufacturing package usually consists of multiple Gerber files.

For example:

Top Copper (top copper layer)

Bottom Copper (bottom copper layer)

Top Solder Mask

Bottom Solder Mask

Silkscreen (print layer)

Board Outline (board boundaries)

Each layer is created as a separate Gerber file and the manufacturer assembles these files together to produce the PCB. Therefore, missing layer exports are one of the most common causes of production errors.

Which Files are Required for PCB Production?

Many designers think that sending only Gerber files is enough. But professional production processes often require additional files.

A standard PCB production package consists of:

Gerber files

Drill File

Pick and Place File

BOM (Bill of Materials)

Assembly Drawing

Especially if PCB typesetting service is to be received, only Gerber files are not sufficient. Component layout and assembly information must also be submitted to the manufacturer.

What is Drill File?

Holes on the PCB are not only defined with Gerber files. A separate Drill File is created for this process.

Drill is in the net:

Via holes

Mounting holes

Through-hole contains all hole information such as component holes.

The PCB manufacturer performs drilling operations according to this file. Missing or incorrect drill file can cause serious problems in the production process. Especially in multilayer boards, the accuracy of hole coordinates is critical.

What is a Pick and Place File?

PCB production and PCB assembly are different processes. After the board is produced, a Pick and Place file is needed for SMT typesetters to place the components in the right spots.

For each component in this file:

Reference number

X-Y coordinate

Rotation angle

Layer information is available.

SMT machines use this data to automatically place components. Especially in high-volume production, even a small error in the Pick and Place file can affect the entire production.

Most Common Mistakes When Buying Gerber Export

A significant portion of the problems experienced in PCB production are caused by mistakes made during the export phase.

The most common problems are the following:

Exporting the wrong layers, missing board outline information, not creating a drill file and mismatches in units of measure can directly affect the production process. In addition, some designers send files without checking the Gerber Viewer before production. This may cause overlooked errors to be reflected in production. For this reason, it is strongly recommended to verify all files after export.

How to get Gerber on Altium, KiCad and Eagle

The basic logic is the same regardless of the PCB design program used. After the design is completed, production outputs are created and Gerber export is done by selecting the required layers. Then a drill file is created and all production files are prepared as a single package. Popular PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, KiCad and Autodesk Eagle all support the Gerber RS-274X format. However, since the export screen of each software is different, the files created must be checked before production.

The Role of the Gerber File in the PCB Typesetting Process

While Gerber files are critical for PCB production, they alone are not sufficient to complete the electronic board.

After the PCB is produced, SMT typesetting, soldering and testing processes begin. Pick and Place files, BOM lists and assembly drawings come into play at these stages.

Providing the production partner with a complete data package therefore not only reduces production time but also reduces the risk of errors.

File management is especially important in projects that transition from prototype to mass production.

Conclusion

Gerber files form the basis of PCB manufacturing and serve as technical documents that tell the manufacturer how to produce the board. However, Gerber files alone are not enough for a successful manufacturing process.

A complete production package with Drill file, Pick and Place file, BOM and assembly information should be prepared. Correctly exported files speed up the production process, while missing or incorrect files can cause cost and time loss.

If there is one issue that is as important as design in electronic product development processes, it is to prepare the correct BOM. Because no matter how successful a PCB design is, missing or incorrect information on the BOM side can lead to serious time and cost losses during the production process.

Many production problems actually start in the BOM file, not on the typesetting line. Incorrect component selection, missing part information or availability problems can delay projects, increase costs and disrupt production processes.

The BOM is therefore not just a list of components, but one of the basic building blocks of electronic manufacturing.

In this article, we discuss what the BOM is, why it is critical in electronic manufacturing and the points to consider when preparing an error-free BOM.

What is BOM (Bill of Materials)?

BOM, or Bill of Materials, is a technical document containing all the components, materials and quantity information required for the production of an electronic product. In Turkish, it is often referred to as a “bill of materials” or “BOM.” (OM)

On the electronics production side, the BOM contains a detailed list of all components to be used on the PCB. From resistors to capacitors, from integrators to connectors, every part to be used in production is included in this list.

In short, the BOM is the production recipe for the electronic board. Production, procurement and engineering teams work on the same document. Therefore, even a small error in the BOM can affect the entire process.

Why is BOM so Important in Electronic Manufacturing?

PCB design alone is not enough to produce an electronic board. The manufacturer must clearly know which component, in which value, in which package and in which quantity to use.

At this point, the BOM is the most critical link between engineering and production. With a properly prepared BOM, component procurement can be done faster, cost calculations are more accurate and the risk of errors during production is reduced.

Especially in recent years, BOM management has become much more critical due to global component supply problems. The absence of a part in stock can affect the entire production plan.

Therefore, today the BOM is not only a design document but also an important part of supply chain management.

What Information Should be Included in the PCB BOM List?

A quality BOM does not only consist of component names. Each part needs to be described in detail for production to run smoothly.

Usually a PCB BOM list contains the following information:

Reference number (R1, C5, U3, etc.)

Component description

Value information

Package type

Manufacturer part number (MPN)

Quantity to be used

Alternative component information

Supplier information

Especially missing the manufacturer part number is one of the most common problems in electronic production. Because many components that appear to have the same value may have different technical specifications.

The Most Common Mistakes When Preparing Electronic BOM

BOM errors are at the root of many delays in electronic production.

One of the most common problems is missing component information. In particular, writing only the value of a resistor or capacitor and not the manufacturer code can create uncertainty in the purchasing process.

Another common mistake is to leave outdated components in the BOM. Some parts used in the design process may be discontinued or become unavailable over time.

Also, the mixing of different engineering revisions can cause serious problems. Sending outdated BOM files to production can create both cost and time loss.

Why Component Availability Should Be Considered When Preparing a BOM?

A component may be technically perfect. But if it is not available on the market, it poses a serious risk to production.

Therefore, when preparing the BOM, not only technical conformity but also lead times and availability of components should be considered.

Especially in mass production projects, parts with long lead times can put a strain on production plans at later stages. For this reason, it is a great advantage to identify alternative components in advance.

Many professional electronics manufacturing companies evaluate these risks in advance in their BOM analysis processes and offer alternative solutions to their customers.

Relationship between BOM and PCB Typesetting Process

The basic reference of the PCB typesetting process is the BOM file. SMT typesetters, purchasing teams and quality control processes proceed through the BOM.

Therefore, any error in the BOM can be directly reflected in production. Incorrect component selection, missing part information or incorrect reference mismatches can cause problems up to the failure of the board.

Especially in high volume production, a small BOM error can affect hundreds or thousands of boards. Therefore, BOM verification processes before production are of great importance.

Things to Consider for Error-Free BOM Preparation

A standardized structure must be established for successful BOM management. All components must be clearly and completely identified and manufacturer part numbers must be specified.

In addition, component availability should be checked regularly and alternative options for critical parts should be identified.

Revision management should also not be neglected. Design changes and BOM files should always be synchronized. Otherwise, serious incompatibilities may arise during production.

Especially in the transition process from prototype to mass production, BOM verification studies provide significant advantages in terms of time and cost.

Conclusion

BOM is one of the most critical documents of electronic production. A properly prepared BOM speeds up procurement processes, facilitates cost control and prevents production errors.

Achieving successful results in electronic board manufacturing is possible not only with a good PCB design, but also with the right BOM management. Therefore, the BOM preparation process should be considered as an integral part of the project development phase.

As Elektroent, we provide support at all stages of PCB production and electronic card typesetting processes, from BOM analysis to component management, and help projects to be transferred to production smoothly.
